Placebo

Eine ältere und inzwischen nicht mehr gebräuchliche Verwendung des Worts ist 'das Placebo singen', was soviel wie 'jemandem nach dem Mund reden' bedeutet. Es rührt von der biblischen Wendung 'placebo Domino in regione vivorum' (Psalm 116:9), was soviel bedeutet wie 'ich werde wandeln vor dem Herrn (dem Herrn gefällig sein) im Land der Lebendigen'. Placebosänger nannte man Personen, die auf Beerdigungen auftauchten, um eine nicht existierende Verbindung zum Toten vorzugeben und sich so in den Genuss des Beerdigungsmahls zu bringen. Im ausgehenden Mittelalter konnten solche Leichenschmausschnorrer bei Beisetzungen reicher Personen durchaus in Truppenstärke anrücken. Da sie bei den Exequien jenen Teil zu singen übernahmen, der die 'placebo Domino'-Wendung enthielt, wurde Placebo in allgemeiner Übertragung auch die Bezeichnung für einen Heuchler und Schmeichler.
