Deus

Der Jesuitenobere Francisco Xavier und seine Brüder gebrauchen [bei ihrer Missionsarbeit im 16. Jahrhunderts] zur Kennzeichnung des Christengottes zunächst den Namen Dainichi. Dieses japanische Wort bezeichnet den von der buddhistischen Shingon–Schule verehrten allmächtigen und unsichtbaren Erzeuger des Universums. Als »Schöpfer«–Name scheint es das Verständnis für die christliche Gottesidee zu erleichtern. Später jedoch wird den Jesuiten bei Besuchen in Shingon–Klöstern bewußt, daß die Bonzen keine Vorstellung von der Dreifaltigkeit haben. Xavier befindet nun, daß der terminologische Notbehelf mehr Schaden anrichtet, als er Nutzen bringt. Dainichi wird durch das lateinische Deus und ausführliche Erläuterungen auf Japanisch ersetzt. Die Europäer sind nicht mehr bereit, »die Wahrheit mit Worten des Irrtums und der Lüge zu erklären«. Sie versuchen, den Prozeß der Japanisierung des Evangeliums vollständig zu kontrollieren.
In diesem Augenblick brechen die — als Teufelsanbeter verleumdeten — Bonzen den Dialog ab und setzen die japanische Sprache, das Medium der Missionierung, als Kampfmittel gegen die christlichen Übersetzer ein. Sie sagen, das Deus (japanisch ausgesprochen: Deusu) und daiuso ein und dasselbe seien. Daiuso bedeutet im Japanischen »Große Lüge«.
